Manchester Orchestra's debut album, I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child, set an unprecedented bar for the band to surpass with their sophomore effort. After having released a very short EP, Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind, to tide over fans, the band was set to be on the path to release the crowning achievement that is now their follow-up, Mean Everything to Nothing.

There was an obvious pressure the band had out for themselves with this release. They could have easily capitalized on the formula that brought them the mild success of their first album, but they managed to take guitar-driven pop sensible songs like "Wolves at Night" and "Now That You're Home" and created a sound that is no stranger to bands like the Foo Fighters and Weezer, just better.

"The Only One" starts off the album with a smoothly executed crescendo into one of this album's best sing-a-longs, likewise with the album's lead single "I've Got Friends." Vocalist Andy Hull has a diverse range as it is, but with songs like the hostile "Shake It Out" and the very Nirvana-esque "In My Teeth," Hull possesses a growl that we've yet to hear on any Manchester Orchestra song thus far.

Strangely, the song that is most familiar with their previous efforts, "I Can Feel a Hot One," is one of the album's biggest standouts. The track appeared on the EP, but isn't any less stellar this time around. It's also nearly impossible not to bob your head and feel the snarl of the guitar riffs and heavy bass drum kicks of "Pride."

Mean Everything to Nothing is nearly perfect, save for the misguided lyrical direction of "100 Dollars," but thankfully, the song is the album's shortest, most obnoxious and least significant. At least they knocked out all of those in one track. Besides that, there are very few slip-ups on this album.

With Mean Everything to Nothing, Manchester Orchestra was able to expand and revitalize their own sound which had tugged on the heart strings of listeners and meddled with what indie-rock really has to offer. Well, outside of pretentious power-pop and acoustic singer-songwriters that are a dime a dozen these days. It's not only a suitable follow-up, but a rock album whose energy and honesty that so many have been searching for.

Mean Everything To Nothing quite possibly just took over the spot of my favorite album. The album shows maturity without losing raw power, I don't think I could ever get tired of it.

Manchester Orchestra has reached new ground with Mean Everything to Nothing. The sound has developed so much since Virgin, and I can't wait to hear more. This has got to be one of the greatest albums in years. From start to finish, you won't be disappointed. Manchester has just raised the bar, and this will be an album to which many in years to come with be compared to (and probably won't live up to).

This album is absolutely beautiful. The lyrics, the music, everything about it. The sound is so unique and fun, its the perfect album not just for summer (although it'll definitely be pumping all of my summer jams) but for all seasons. Its exquisitely well done and a great leap after the amazingness that was Like a Virgin Losing a Child. Smiling

Thank you for making such an amazing album. I cant stop drowning in it, and I'm diggin it.
Unfotunately I'm from a state thats 20 years behind the rest of the country so you've really got to turn every stone for decent music these days... Thanks to having turned brand new's and kevin devine's I found yours. And its amazing! Keep the good tunes coming! I cant wait to see you guys @ Bottletree in Birmingham, Alabama. It's a very good venue with a much more personal atmosphere and I cant wait.

Take Care,
Blaine

After listening to I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child and over 150 other MO/Andy Hull b sides, side projects, live recordings, etc non stop for nearly two years... Well, let's just say that I had high expectations for this new cd. I'll start by saying that in small town Mississippi, record stores are few and their selection is very limited. I had planned on buying METN online but I walked into the store and saw both vinyl and cds. The vinyl was only ten dollars so I decided to buy that (because you're never going to beat that price, right?) and buy the cd later. When I got to my car I was ecstatic to see that it came with a free cd. So I want to thank Manchester Orchestra for doing that. There's no reason to pay for music fifteen different times. After following youtube videos for months, very few of the songs were new to me. I wasn't quite sure what to think of the album at first (I just thought they'd turned up the distortion) but after my third listen I realized that MO has truly found its voice. I could definitely tell that this was more of a team effort than ILAVLAC. Some of the songs on ILAVLAC felt like Andy wrote a song and the rest of the band just kind of added on their parts. METN felt more like the songs grew with the entire band's input at every stage of the songwriting process.

Basically, I've been pleased with the new cd and if it wasn't for mewithoutYou's newest, I doubt it would have left my cd player.

This CD is simply amazing. This album definately shows you how much Manchester Orchestra has grown and matured musically and lyrically. Andy is one of the best lyricist (funny word) of all time. METN is one of the few albums out there where you wont even have to hit next....this cd stayed in my cd player for a week straight.

Manchester Orchestra TRULY has a passion for music & it is highly evident in their latest album, "Mean Everything To Nothing." Compared to their debut album, I'm Like a Virgin Losing A Child," their sound has matured & they have grown to a level of exquisite and powerful music. "I've got Friends," one of their singles, and "Shake It Out" are two of the songs that stand out on this album for their melodies and captivating lyrics. This is most certainly going to be one of the TOP albums of '09 and deserves all of the recognition that it has gotten thus far. definitely make sure to purchase this album and catch them on tour, because nothing is better than live music... especially live music coming from MO! This album really has some interesting ideas in it. It is a journey, especially when listened to along with Like a Virgin. Like a Virgin really brings this album into focus. Each song really complements the next. The soft tones of "I Can Feel A Hot One" lead perfectly into the loud, harsher "My Friend Marcus." The entire album is just amazing, simply amazing.

How can such a young band show so much maturity? How did I not instantly fall in love with the lesser known-later tracks? These questions will go through your mind after listening to this album through and through. At first the album may seem like a whimsical and slowly pacing down album that may have been not as electrifying and immediate as 2006's 'IM LIKE A VIRGIN LOSING A CHILD'. But soon after truly listening to it, you can appreciate every hard struck guitar chord to every scream. The album starts off pretty cheery even with the song "The Only One". But as soon as the chorus progresses through "Shake It Out" your for sure to feel the deepness and compatibility that the band projects together and shares to the listener. The songs may slow down mid way through, but as only to come off serious. This is definitely a theme I get from this album. Not only taking a second glance at life, but taking a deeper slower approach. The songs only get more deeper as it progresses and it truly grows upon you in a great way. I am exited to hear more work from the hard working band, because this album truly is one you will have on repeat when you put it on. 9.0/10 Smiling

i heard these guys one day on a chance encounter. loved them from that day on! this is my most favorite band no doubt, every single line of every single song is pure magic. Andy and the band just know how to do this. they go from deep meaningful stuff to a more lighthearted sound, but in the end there seems to be something for everyone, Manchester Orchestra is the kind of band that has almost litterally writen a "listen to this and you'll make it" handbook if you put every album and ep together. it's the type of band where you can just turn up the music and tune out the world. they're quite litterally my little "escape" button. whether i'm all alone having an emotional breakdown or in a croud in the city. i'm sure you'll love this album.

i have every single song available on my ipod and there has not been a day in several months i have not heard them. Mean Everything To Nothing is nothing short of a masterpiece. there is not one song i wouldnt gladly put on repeat for an hour.

its funny how i can relate to almost every song. and im on this site every time i can get on a computer. ha. this band cannot fail. every song coming from this band has completely one me over. i do not believe in perfect but this band gets as close to it as possible. no doubt anyone can fall in love with them. these guys can move mountains! haha, ive been in the worst part of my life and this band has unbelievably helped me keep myself sane. i will grow my kids to this band (:
